Art Basel 2018 – Your Guide to Miami Beach’s Art Extravaganza
Art Basel, one of the largest privately owned and operated art fairs in the world, returns to Miami Beach this December. First hosted in Miami Beach back in 2002, the multi-day, multi-location event features numerous international galleries showcasing the works of some of the leading figures of modern and contemporary art.
The main show, Art Basel Miami Beach, returns to the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 6th through 9th. That show will feature over 260 different galleries from 34 different countries. In addition to the namesake show, the Art Basel festival features a wide variety of other shows and fairs scattered across the Greater Miami area. Here are a few of our favorites:
The Writing on the Wall
Set in the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, on the campus of FIU, “The Writing on the Wall” features countless letters, essays, poems, and notes from those incarcerated. Wallpapering the walls of the Frost gallery, the letters come from artists Baz Dreisinger and Hank Willis Thomas’s For Freedoms Project, a non-profit aiming to use art as a vehicle “for participation in deeper public discussions on civic issues and core values.”
The free show takes place through December 9th and entry is free. For more information, visit the Frost Art Museum’s website.
The Art of Banksy
Few modern artists capture the wider public’s imagination as Banksy. Equal parts famous and infamous, the secretive British street artist has made a name for himself on both sides of the Atlantic. Running from December 1st through February 28th, Magic City Studios will host this touring show . It will feature 80 paintings, screen prints, sculptures and early-career photographs by the artists.
The show is the brainchild of Steve Lazarides, the elusive artist’s former agent, who sought out loans from private collectors. Despite Banksy’s refusal to charge his fans to see his works, since this Is private collection tickets cost between $35.99-$49.99. For more information, visit the event’s official site.
Sleeping Beauty Dreams
Art Basel is about art. While for many that may induce images of paintings, sculptures and other static pieces, art comes in a wide variety of shapes and forms. One of the shows we are most excited about is the ballet Sleeping Beauty Dreams. Taking place December 7th and 8th at the Adrienne Arsht Center, the ballet stars famed ballerina Diana Vishneva. And it is a dance and art inspired take on a classic fairy tale. What makes this performance so unique is that it features digital avatars performing with the dancers onstage. It’s set to a soundtrack by Dutch electronica composer Noisia. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit the Arsht Center’s official site.
